Sprekelia formosissima is a wonderful container plant that originated in Mexico and is often called the Aztec Lily or Jacobean Lily and is reminiscent of a large 5 in. red velvet orchid atop an 8 to 12 in. stem. The petals of this exotic flower are in two groups: the upper three petals stand up, curving back at the tips, while the lower three are pendant, rolling up like a tube at the base, encircling the stamens.  They can be planted outside in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil if well mulched for the winter.
