Hedychium coccineum Native to the Himalayas, this 6 to 9 ft. tall Ginger Lily is quite hardy in this area as well. It sports long brilliant red stamens and the flowers resemble orange-scarlet butterflies on a 10 in. tall flower spike. The fragrance will perfume the late summer evenings. It prefers medium to wet soils and full sun to partial shade. Ginger Lily spreads slowly by rhizomes. Cut back old stems after flowers fade to encourage new growth.
