Bletilla striata ‘Alba’ is the solid white-flowered form of the hardy Bletilla orchid. The two deeply veined, medium-green leaves arise in early spring, followed immediately by the narrow flower spike emerging from between the leaves. In early May in NC, the 2-inch spike is clothed with 1-inch pure white flowers that are perfect for a mass planting in the woodland garden. Moist well-drained soils with sun to light shade result in the fastest growth. Under good conditions, expect a 2-foot wide patch in 5 years.
